1. Special Mall:
![]() ![]() Today I did a look see – (think see) of the art of shopping and have presented some of my thoughts in the next few photos and words. Marc sent me a photo from near the old Shea Stadium in Queens NY (Queens is one of the 5 boroughs that make up NY City). The language and general appearance of mall says to me that it matches the needs of the community it serves. I wonder how they do business with their community? I bet this “Busy Mall” really serves the needs of the community in a way I have no concept of. What do you think? 2. Texas community,We spent 15 years in the ranch country in central Texas — When we were there, every business in the community did business in a way that was unique to the community — each “business” family did business thru several generations in the community and was very careful to do three things – 1. Serve the needs of the community, 2. not make excess profit at the expense of neighbors, 3. not tread on other community business. Most everyone had family roots reaching to German immigrants from 1850. So, “business” families, ranchers, and farmers were all inter-married. Like all families, not everyone spoke to everyone – there were disagreements – but they still had did business with one another. That made for a very special commercial environment where the needs of the community were served. When we lived in Texas, folks wanted a butcher that knew exactly what their family expected to eat on Tuesdays, or which brand of beer they expected to be sitting in ice water by the front door a 6:00 each evening, or who was under the weather and needed something special delivered to their ranch — they wanted to have a tab and so they could go in and pay when possible – they did not want a bill sent to their home. Weinheimer’s matched the community it served. It was said –If Weinheimers’s does not have it, you do not need it From the web I got this:SpecialtiesThe store carries a complete line of groceries, produce, fresh meats, boots, jeans, hardware, housewares, paint, vet medicine, fishing tackle, ammunition and most anything else you might want. HistoryEstablished in 1906 The store was originally located on the old U.S. Hwy 290, now known as Ranch Road 1. In 1956 the store was relocated to the new U.S. Hwy 290 due to the relocation of the highway. The store has always been a general merchandise store trying to serve the needs of the community. Originally the store carried items like horse collars, gasoline, feed, and other items needed by the local farmers. It even had a barber shop, saloon, and bought and sold chickens, eggs, cotton, animal hides, and pecans. Meet the Business Owner: DeAnn H.DeAnn graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988 with a degree in Finance. She moved back to Stonewall in 1996 to take over the family business. 3. Heritage shopping Oh — how ’bout my Grandpa:
In 1903 between April 18 and 28, Grandpa rented a mare for the day from A. Manges, for 25 cents; Got 2 pigs at Frank Shaffer’s for $5; paid $142 for black mare; bought fertilizer at J Faust – paid $11.25; bought lumber from Hamer’s. A.Manges, Frank Shaffers, A.J.Faust, Hamers would have to run their business a lot different now — The needs of the community have changed thus stores must change to match the community it served. 4. Beware Now days with the digital imaging — beware – what you see may not really be there! Check Ott travel (airboat family) advertisement above the door, good looking couple leaving mall area, and dogs discussing the fire hydrant. 5.
